The Scottish Terrier is a confident, loyal, and spirited companion, admired for their strong character and unmistakable presence. Compact yet sturdy, Scotties are intelligent and independent thinkers who form deep bonds with their family and are known for their devotion and quiet determination. While they may be reserved with strangers, they are affectionate and attentive with those they trust, making them wonderful companions in the right home. Generally a robust and healthy breed, Scottish Terriers benefit from ethical breeding practices and regular preventative care. As with all purebred dogs, they may be predisposed to certain hereditary conditions, including Von Willerbrand’s Disease (VWD/vWD) – a genetic bleeding disorder cause by a lack of specific clotting factor and skin sensitivities, highlighting the importance of health testing and ongoing veterinary support. Bred originally as a working terrier, Scottish Terriers retain a natural tenacity and love for exploration. They enjoy mental stimulation, gentle exercise, and having a role within the household. Their distinctive wiry coat requires regular grooming to maintain its iconic appearance and overall skin health. Scottish Terriers are best suited to families who appreciate a confident, independent dog with a strong sense of loyalty. They form deep bonds with their people and thrive in homes where their personality is understood and respected rather than overly managed. This breed does particularly well with adults, couples, or families with older children who can interact calmly and appropriately, as Scottish Terriers are not always tolerant of rough handling or overly boisterous behaviour. Scottish Terriers have an average lifespan of 12–15 years, stand approximately 25–28 cm (10–11 inches) tall, and typically weigh 8–10 kg (18–22 lbs).
